June 7, 2007

I had training and left at 4 pm to come to the barbecue. When I arrived you were sound asleep in the chair. I could not arouse you but I took you outside anyway because it was a beautiful day and the barbecue was on the patio. You never did wake up through all the noise and music so I decided to bring you upstairs so the aides could put you in bed. I was very concerned because you never even flinched when they moved you and changed you and your coloring was very pale. The nurse took your vitals and your respirations were low but your o2 was good. You never woke up that night and Mom stayed for a while to make sure you were okay. We even had to put our hands on your chest to make sure you were breathing.

Friday you were better and much more alert. We got to go outside and you ate a little for me.

Saturday you were alert as well but a little more restless and slightly agitated. You calmed down and we spent the afternoon together but when they put you in bed you were very restless and having a difficult time calming down. Sometimes I truly believe you are trying to hard to break through this silence and be able to speak.

Sunday morning the nurse said you were very agitated and had a temp. They had to give you Ativan to calm you and put you on the cooling blanket to get down the temp. You were better after several hours and they were able to get you up in the chair. We went outside and you slept for a while, when you woke up Dad had arrived and you were very alert and responsive. Unfortunately, it was short lived. You became very agitated by dinner time and the nurse gave you Ativan once again. You were put to bed but the agitation got much worse and you spiked a temp of 102. They decided to put you on the cooling blanket and the Dr. ordered Ativan and Morphine injections. You were extremely agitated and sweating, it is so hard to watch you like that. I feel so helpless and can do nothing but try to calm you down. After several hours you fell asleep, the aides came in to change you because everything gets soaked from sweating. You slept all night and for the most part the next day. The medication lasts for some time and it takes a day or two for you to come completely out of it.
